Things to do in Kansas City for Adults

I haven't lived in Kansas City for long, but I've found some fun and interesting things to do in the short time I've lived here. This list includes things to do in Kansas City and the surrounding areas.

Here is the list:

1. Topgolf (Overland Park, Kansas)

What is it?

  • Topgolf is a golfing range in Overland Park, Kansas.

  • Topgolf is different than other golfing ranges in that the point of Topgolf is to try to hit the golf ball into concave netted areas, which garner the player points.

  • Each section at Topgolf allows 1-6 players (although eight people are allowed to be in the bay, only six people are allowed to play during each game).

  • Topgolf serves food, alcohol, and regular drinks, and you are served at your section.

  • Each section features either a high top table with chairs or couches.

  • Each section features a large television screen to watch Topgolf television and/or look at the scores of your TopGolf game.

  • Clubs are provided for you (both right and left-handed clubs) free of charge, but you can bring your own clubs if you want and they have a storage area for them.

Why is it fun?

  • You really don't have to do much work to set your ball up to hit. You simply wave your club over a designated area in the section, and the golf ball drops out at your feet. All you have to do is pick it up and place it on the plastic "tee".

  • The sections are on three levels, with each level giving you a different perspective, so your experience at Topgolf is never the same, making it more fun.

  • The sections are in the shade, so you don't have to worry about getting too hot or getting sunburned.

  • There are lots of different types of games you can play at Topgolf, making it more fun and interesting.

2. Escape Room KC (Union Station and River Market, Kansas City, Missouri)

What is it?

  • Escape Room KC is a series of rooms that feature different mysteries to solve in order to escape the room within an hour.

  • Each room has a difficulty level which makes solving the mystery easier or more difficult for the player(s).

  • The rooms feature a television set which gives the player(s) clues if they are stuck.

Why is it fun?

  • If you work with a team of people, it is fun to be able to see other's strengths in action and see how you can work together to solve a mystery.

  • The rooms are set up in a way that there are a lot of physical items to touch and mysteries to solve, so it's easy to get into the fun of the game quickly.

  • The gamemakers obviously put a lot of thought and effort into the stories and setup of the rooms, and it shows, so nothing takes you out of the story or solving the mystery.

  • Just when you think you have one mystery solved, the game goes on and continues to surprise you. My husband and I played by ourselves and thought we were almost done, only to discover that there was way more to the story than we originally thought.

3. Shawnee Mission Park (Shawnee, Kansas)

What is it?

  • Shawnee Mission Park is a large recreational park in Shawnee, Kansas.

  • Shawnee Mission Park features a Theatre in the Park, a beach, a marina, and an off-the-leash dog park.

  • The park has a variety of activities available for those who enjoy the outdoors such as: archery, fishing, hiking trails, a disc golf course, and areas to ride bicycles and horses.

Why is it fun?

  • At the marina, you can rent canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and pedal boats and go out on the very large lake. My husband and I have gone out on one of the canoes and it was a unique and beautiful perspective of the park. The canoes are a little unstable, so if you are not used to rowing in one, it might take a little getting used to.

  • There is a lot to do at the park. You can engage in a variety of activities if you like the outdoors.

  • The off-the-leash dog park is so much fun to watch. The dogs there have so much fun and if you watch from on the lake (from a canoe, etc.), it is a better perspective because the beach part of the dog park is sloped, so you can see better from on the lake.

  • There is a beach where you can go swimming, complete with sand. There is a new beach house opening for the summer of 2018. You can participate in open water swim training for a low cost if you would like to learn how.

4. Glore Psychiatric Museum (St.Joseph, Missouri)

What is it?

  • Glore Psychiatric Museum is a museum dedicated to teaching the public about past mental health techniques and treatments.

Why is it fun?

  • I wouldn't necessarily call it "fun", but it is very, very interesting and at times, horrifying.

  • I've never been a big fan of museums, but this one is one of the most interesting ones I've ever been to and I was never bored. If you are interested in mental health and the treatments that were used in the past, you will probably find this museum interesting.

  • Some of the past treatments of patients are pretty disturbing and horrifying, but I believe that it is important to see exactly how far mental health treatment has come in just over a hundred years. It's really not a museum for the faint of heart and I would absolutely recommend that you leave your children and/or teenagers at home.

  • I can honestly say I've never been to a museum like this before. It truly is one-of-a-kind, and the only museum I've ever been to that has been as disturbing has been the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C.

  • I have studied mental health and have a master's degree in social work, so if you too have studied mental health, psychology, and/or sociology, this is a great museum to get some more information about past mental health treatments.

5. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - Mainstreet (Kansas City, Missouri)

What is it?

  • Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - Mainstreet is a movie theater dedicated to the ultimate movie experience.

  • The theater focuses on providing its guests a distraction-free experience, so if you use your cell phone or talk (or create any disturbance for other guests), you will first be warned by the manager, then kicked out without a refund if you are warned again.

Why is it fun?

  • If you love watching movies in a theater, but hate when rude, inconsiderate people distract you, this is the place for you. It allows you to have a movie experience where you can expect other guests to be polite or they will be kicked out.

  • Each theater has a server or servers, who deliver a full menu throughout the movie. Bills are distributed thirty minutes before the movie ends so you have time to get any last refills or food and pay before you leave.

  • You write your orders on order papers at your table, then put them up for the server to see. You can also write complaints about other guests with these papers, so don't hesitate to use them if someone is being rude.

  • Each movie has a theme of weird little vignettes before the trailers start, so if you arrive early you won't be bored, but you might laugh or be a little uncomfortable. The movie "IT" was particularly weird because the theme was unsettling clowns.

  • The theater is in the middle of downtown Kansas City, so there is a lot to do around there if you are waiting for a movie to start.

6. Worlds of Fun Haunt (Kansas City, Missouri)

What is it?

  • Worlds of Fun Haunt is a Halloween-themed haunted attraction that begins mid-September and runs through the end of October on Friday and Saturday nights.

  • The park is filled with "monsters" who scare patrons of the park in designated "scare zones".

  • There are several sections of the park transformed into events and haunted attractions that in the past have included "CornStalkers", "Blood on the Bayou", "BloodShed", "CarnEvil", "Haunted Homecoming", "Lore of the Vampire", "Miss Lizzie's Chamber of Horrors", "Outlaw's Revenge", "Overlord's Awakening", "Ripper Alley", "Skeleton Crew", "The Boneyard", "Urgent Scare", and "Zombie High".

Why is it fun?

  • There are many events and attractions for everyone, which is good because not everyone is scared by the same things. The park is massive, so it takes time to get through all the attractions, making it worth your money.

  • Overlord's Awakening is quite a sight to see. It is an event that kicks off the beginning of the Haunt at Worlds of Fun. In the event, the Overlord comes out in a creepy-looking car and leads his "monsters" out. The "monsters" are all the actors who haunt the scare zones, events, and the haunted attractions. The sight of so many actors in creepy costumes and makeup is pretty cool to see. Just make sure you get there early because it fills up fast and you won't be able to see anything.

  • CornStalkers has to be the scariest attraction at the Haunt. I've gone through twice with my husband and it has been different each time, but the actors are very good at hiding in plain sight. I've never been so paranoid that someone was going to walk up behind me in any other haunted attraction in my life.

  • The scare zones are fun to walk through. If you startle easily or scream loudly, the actors will target you. I had several hide from me and scare me because some of the areas have either fog or smoke machines and you can't see them easily. Sometimes they will walk behind you for a while and growl and scare you, so it's pretty fun because you never know how an actor will scare you.

7. Smiley's Golf Complex (Lenexa, Kansas)

What is it?

  • Smiley's Golf Complex features two 18-hole miniature golf courses (one kid-friendly, one difficult), a driving range, and an executive 18-hole golf course.

Why is it fun?

  • The "difficult" 18-hole miniature golf course is very unique in that it's modeled after real golf courses. This course really is challenging and unlike any other miniature golf courses I've ever tried.

  • I think the "difficult" miniature golf course is the standout for me at this golf complex. I find that I like going back and improving my score and learning new ways around the obstacles on the course. The course is never usually crowded and it takes quite a while to get through.

  • There are a variety of different types of golf for all levels. If you like miniature golf, there are two courses to play on. If you like using a driving range, it's not far from the entrance, so you don't have to lug your golf clubs far. If you like going on a golf course, there's that too, so even if you aren't sure what you want to do, there are a lot of options.

8. Olathe's Got Talent (Olathe, Kansas)

What is it?

  • Olathe's Got Talent is a talent show for elementary, junior high, and high school students in Kansas.

Why is it fun?

  • Some of the kids and teenagers have genuine talent and it is really fun to see them perform, whether it be singing, acting, dancing, etc.

  • It can be entertaining to watch a talent show in general because you get to see a range of talented people and judge for yourself which people you think should win.

This is a list comprised of activities and places I have personally been. I have a list of other places I'd like to visit soon, and if they are good places to visit, I'll add them to this list later. Please let me know if you have any questions, and if you have some cool places that are unique, please let me know in the comment section below.
